: Dexter attempts to frame Doakes as the Bay Harbor Butcher.

The story of centers on the discovery of Dexter’s underwater dumping ground, sparking a massive investigation into a killer the media dubs the "Bay Harbor Butcher" . The Investigation

Sergeant remains the only person who truly sees through Dexter’s mask. Their intense cat-and-mouse game culminates when Doakes finally catches Dexter in the act of disposing of a body. Dexter subdues him and locks him in a secluded cabin, leading to a psychological standoff where Dexter eventually reveals his true nature. The Lila Factor

While dealing with the investigation, Dexter meets , an impulsive and dangerous artist who becomes his Narcotics Anonymous sponsor (and later, his lover). Lila is the first person to "see" Dexter's darkness and embrace it, but her obsession turns toxic. The Climax The season reaches its peak with several key revelations:

: Lila discovers the cabin where Doakes is held. Recognizing him as the man standing in the way of her life with Dexter, she sets the cabin on fire, killing Doakes and unintentionally completing Dexter’s frame-up. The Ending

With Doakes officially labeled as the Butcher, Dexter is cleared of suspicion. He eventually tracks Lila to Paris and kills her to ensure his secrets remain safe, returning to Miami with a "clean slate" and a renewed commitment to his Code.

: Dexter discovers that his father, Harry, committed suicide out of shame after seeing what he had trained Dexter to become.
