Jack eventually discovers his origin: he died centuries ago saving his sister from a frozen lake, an act of selfless heroism that led the Man in the Moon to transform him. Embracing his purpose as the bringer of and protection, Jack rallies the children to stand up to Pitch.

Initially, Jack is reluctant to join, feeling like an outsider who doesn't know his "center" or his past.
