: Once in the U.S., Jessie Lee leads his "posse"—a diverse group including the mute Obobo (Tiny Lister Jr.), the gambler Little J (Stephen Baldwin), and the smooth Angel (Tone Loc)—west toward his hometown of Freemanville .

: Jessie Lee returns to find Freemanville, an independent Black township, under threat from white racists and a corrupt sheriff (Richard Jordan). He also seeks personal vengeance against the men responsible for the lynching of his preacher father, King David .

: During the Spanish-American War in 1898 Cuba, a unit of Buffalo Soldiers led by Jessie Lee is sent on a suicide mission by their corrupt and racist commanding officer, Colonel Graham (Billy Zane), to seize a cache of Spanish gold.

: Realizing Graham intends to kill them to keep the gold for himself, the soldiers shoot their way out and desert the Army, escaping back to the United States with the treasure.
