The movie concludes with the Perron family successfully escaping the haunted farmhouse, and the Warrens helping them to rebuild their lives. The film ends with a sense of closure, but also leaves room for a potential sequel, which would go on to become "The Conjuring 2" (2016).

The movie centers around the Perron family, consisting of Roger (Lili Taylor) and Carolyn (Shanola Hampton), and their five daughters. They move into a beautiful old farmhouse in Harrisville, Rhode Island, which they renovate. However, soon after their arrival, strange and terrifying events begin to occur, including unexplained noises, movements, and apparitions.

The film is based on the true story of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren and their investigation into a haunted farmhouse in Rhode Island in 1974.

As the hauntings escalate, the Warrens and the Perrons work together to uncover the root of the evil presence and to cleanse the house of the malevolent spirit. The Warrens perform a series of séances and rituals to try and communicate with the spirits and ultimately perform an exorcism to rid the house of the demon.

Desperate for help, the Perrons contact Ed and Lorraine Warren (played by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson), a pair of paranormal investigators who have dealt with numerous cases of demonic possession. The Warrens soon discover that the farmhouse has a dark history and that a malevolent spirit, believed to be the ghost of a witch named Bathsheba Sherman, is responsible for the haunting.
