Set in the 1860s, the story follows a group of disillusioned settlers in the town of Prosperity who decide they have had enough of the "Wild West". They hire (Candy), an alcoholic and supposedly experienced wagon master, to lead them on a reverse journey back to the civilized East. Along the way, they face various obstacles:
