In the film, Harry is summoned to Los Angeles by his boss, Eliot Draisen (played by Jeffrey Jones), to investigate the kidnapping of a wealthy heiress, Jennifer Downing. Draisen, who is actually the mastermind behind the crime, hires Harry specifically because he expects him to fail miserably at solving the case.
